General guideline for online exam via Zoom

Please ensure that the following items are available for the examination:
• laptop or desktop computer available with webcam/mic;
• excellent speaker on the computer to listen to the pronouncer during Oral test clearly;
• excellent network connection;
• valid passport or ID card to show before the exam;
• zoom available on their computer;
• quiet room with comfortable table/chair;
• any medication in case they need to take during the exam;

These are not allowed during the examination
• switch off the webcam/mic/computer;
• leaving the device before the end of the exam;
• using the tablets/phones to take the exam;
• using pen or pencil during the exam;
• using any other devices to record the exam;
• logging out the online exam platform and try to log in again;

We will create a separate WhatsApp group for each level where the candidate can ask questions before the Final, get the Zoom link and Exam link. The link for the Whatsapp group will be sent to you after 17 Nov2020. Zoom links will be shared the day before the exam for each level on the WhatsApp group, but the exam links just few minutes before the exam starts. The candidates will take the exam under the supervision of ESB team.

Please do inform us in advance if any student is unable to attend the exam due to health condition. In such case, a medical certificate or a letter from the doctor is required.

Competition Level (based on Grades and Bee levels)

The students of lower levels can compete at higher level if they feel prepared for the level.

Competition Format

The competition will be run in three rounds: preliminary round, semifinal round and final round.
The venues for the preliminary and semifinal rounds will be in the participant's school. The final round will be held in Gdansk, Poland.
The top 20% of participating students from the country will be invited to the semi-final round. A minimum 10 students from each Bee Level (1-10) will be invited to the final round. The number of finalists might increase depending on the number of participants. The finalists will be chosen according to the scores received in the semifinal round.
Three-day full-board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) accommodation will be provided for all the candidates and their teachers free of charge.

Territory and Eligibility 

The competition is open to students who are studying in Primary 1 to Secondary 5 from the countries in Asia and Europe. Only the students who go to national or private schools and study English as a foreign language are eligible to participate in this competition. English Language International students will not be admitted to this Competition. Students that are considered English Language International students are the ones who were born or have lived and attended school for at least 3 years in an English-speaking country as well as those who live in a non-English speaking country but attend an English/American International school. Should a student who is considered English Language International students according to the above definition apply for a regular category through another school, ELPC organisation reserves the right to disqualify them from the Competition. 

Prizes

All participants will receive a certificate of participation in the preliminary and semi-final round.

The finalists who achieve the highest points in each category will be awarded as follows: 1 x Gold medal, 2 x Silver medals and 3 x Bronze medals. The rest of the finalists who pass the final round tests will also be awarded an internationally recognised certificate in English by Gatehouse Awards United Kingdom.

Additional prizes for the Gold, Silver and Bronze winners will be announced closer to the Competition date.

Competition Tasks & Time Allowed

Candidates in all rounds (preliminary, semi-final and final) will be given three tasks: 

Writing

Task 1 (10 minutes) :
participants read the text and identify and correct 10 misspelled words

Task 2 (5 minutes) :
- Bee Levels 1-4 – participants need to identify and correctly spell 5 words based on a picture and scrambled up letters.

- Bee Levels 5-10 – participants need to identify and correctly spell 5 words based on a definition and scrambled up letters. 

Listening

Task 3 (approximate 5 minutes) :
participants listen to a short recording, read the text and complete the gaps with correct spelling of the words 

Oral

Task 4 :
in the preliminary and semi-final round each participant will be given only two words to spell orally, but for the final round the number of words will double. (time allowed: the spellers have total 1 minute and 45 seconds to think and spell each word after the clear pronunciation and all information are given. The judges and pronouncer will not communicate with the speller during the final 30 seconds. The judges will disqualify any speller who does not provide a complete spelling before the expiration of time (0 seconds). If the judges and pronouncer need to discuss a competition-related matter while the speller is contemplating a word, they may pause the time clock, and they will inform the speller when they pause and resume the time clock.)

Marking Guidance for All Bee Levels

Task 1 – Written (20 points in total)
* 1 point for each word identified
* 1 point for each word with spelling fully corrected
** no partial points for partially correct spelling

Task 1.1 – Written (10 points in total)
* 2 marks will be allocated for each word spelt correctly
** no partial points for partially correct spelling

Task 2 – Listening (10 points in total)
* 2 marks will be allocated for each word spelt correctly
** no partial points for partially correct spelling

Task 3 – Oral (10 points in total)
* 5 marks will be allocated for each word spelt correctly
** no partial points for partially correct spelling All tasks: plural forms and capital letters are required where necessary to obtain a mark.
*** Oral spelling task does not require capital letters, but plural forms are mandatory.
